About Efthymios

Efthymios (aka Tim) Chatzigiannis is a Greek composer and sound artist based in Oxford. Born in Ioánnina, he got involved with music at a very early age and throughout his career he has studied, and performed in, various genres and styles. At the age of 6  he began studying classical piano at the Municipal Conservatory of Ioánnina. At 13 he took up the electric guitar and began his studies at the Conservatory Fillipos Nakas focusing mainly in rock, blues and jazz, and  started performing regularly with various rock/blues bands. At the age of 17 he went to Venice to study architecture at the Institute of Architecture of Venice. While in Venice he began studying classical harmony, and continued his studies on the guitar. After one year, he decided to go to the United Kingdom and focus on musical studies.

In 2005 he completed a BA program in Music at the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, and in 2007 he completed an MA in the Interdisciplinary Arts and Practices, specializing in Composition and Sonic Art, at  Oxford Brookes University. In 2011 he also completed a PhD study at Oxford Brookes University entitled: Aural Evolutions: Reception - Perception - Interpretation. This study focused on the creative possibilities of acoustic phenomena, and the way sound’s identity is altered by the interaction with the environment that surrounds it.

Efthymios is producing sound installations and compositions that explore the phenomenolohy of sound, and exploit physics in order to manipulate sound. He creates audio/visual sculptures that deal with particular aspects of the physics of sound. Subtle, almost imperceptible phenomena are amplified and brought forth in order to explore the way sound interacts with the environment that surrounds it, but also the way that our perception of this environment is shaped by the alterations in the sound.

He is also active in the composition and performance of electronic music and his main interests are real-time digital audio processing, programming new audio/visual performance interfaces, and composing for film and various digital media. He regularly employs music technology and real-time audio manipulation in improvisations, live concerts, and in the studio using various DAW's and plug-ins. His music has been performed in the UK, Holland and Brazil.
